Mikhail Glinka in Ukraine in the summer of 1838

Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka was the first Russian composer to gain wide recognition within his own country, and is often regarded as the fountainhead of Russian classical music.

In 1837, Glinka was installed as the instructor of the Imperial Chapel Choir. In 1838, at the suggestion of the Tsar, he went off to Ukraine to gather new voices for the choir; He founded  19 new boys. On the way to Kiev Glinka visited Kachanivka (Chernigivshina).

Grigory Tarnovsky, the owner of Kachanivka estate, was a very wealthy man. He had huge land plots, 9 thousand souls of serfs, industrial enterprises (sugar factories, mills). But Tarnovsky spent a lot of money on works of art and on the help of artists. He often visited artists, composers, writers and poets.

All summer spent in Kachanovka Mikhail Glinka. He loved to play in the bulkhead grotto under the pavilion. Since then, this building is called Glinka pavilion

In the morning, Mikhail Glinka walked to the pavilion and began to create. Here he wrote a cantata in honor of G. Tarnovsky "Anthem of the owner", worked on the Pushkin poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila". Morning coolness, bird concerts and the 15-year-old Maria Zadorozhna inspired the composer.

When the sun rose above, the Taras Shevchenko's friend, the artist Vasyl Sternberg and retired Major Victor Zabila came to see Glinka. Vasily painted Zabila, and he took up the guitar strings and sang his own poetry.

When he listened he was shocked by songs through tears ... On this day, M. Glinka put two emotional poetry on the music - two romances on the words of Victor Zabila "Gude witer velmy v poli" and "Ne schebechy soloveiko".

Soon the whole of St. Petersburg sang these romances of the broken heart.

In Kachanivka, Mikhail Glinka created the opera "Ruslan and Lyudmila" and here it was performed for the first time by the troupe of the home theater.
